Did You Know? Medical Minutia to Muse and Use
As a marketing company with a medical focus, McCauley Marketing Services would like to share some interesting medical trivia we’ve picked up with doing marketing research and strategy:
- The first breast implants consisted of paraffin injections into the breasts of Japanese women in the 1940’s. Because the waxy substance had a tendency to become lumpy, women turned next to fat injections. Today, analogous fat transfer is again being researched for use in breast enhancement and breast reconstruction surgeries.
- Liposuction, a cosmetic surgery procedure which uses suction to remove unwanted fat cells from areas of the body, was invented by a gynecologist in Italy in the mid 1970’s.
- Researchers at Northwestern University are now speculating that a small portion of the brain, known as the amygdale, has a direct correlation with how “social” someone becomes. Studies revealed the size of the brain segment reflected the complexity of the individual’s social networks and customer relationships regardless of age or gender.
- The first rhinoplasty (nose surgery) on record dates back to 600 B.C. Documented in ancient Indian Sanskrit texts, “nose jobs” were performed by cutting skin from the cheek or forehead, twisting the skin over a leaf, and then sewing the skin back. Physicians inserted wooden tubes into the nostrils to keep the airway clear.
- Breast implants come with a conditional manufacturer warranty, so a serial number is included for tracking and identification purposes. There have actually been murder cases with unidentifiable victims who were eventually identified by their breast implants.
- The word “Rhytid” refers to wrinkles. Remember that customers may not understand all medical lingo and industry-specific vocabulary. Depending on your demographic, by generalizing wording, you’re maximizing the clarity of your advertising, PR, and social media messages.
- A human brain is composed of 75% water. For that reason, even slight dehydration can cause headaches, so reach for a glass of water the next time your head starts pounding.
- Most humans have 26 bones in each foot. However, some people have supernumerary seamoids (extra bones) located behind the big toe, giving them 28 bones in each foot.
- On average, red blood cells live about 120 days, but not to worry, you’re body is constantly producing new ones. In fact, your body contains about 2.5 trillion red blood cells.
