Revising Your SEO Strategy
A recent article from Website Magazine (WM) suggests marketing professionals should give up the SEO dream. For those who aren’t as privy to marketing slang as some of us, SEO means search engine optimization, and the SEO dream involves optimizing your website in such a way that your website appears on the first page of search engine results pages (SERP) for all the keywords related to your business. As marketing professionals, the McCauley Marketing team cannot give up our SEO dream completely. However, WM’s article did make some valid points about how SEO strategies need to be re-evaluated to market a website to the target audience rather than just the search engines.
We often discuss how search engines are constantly changing their algorithms, and WM explains that “the trouble with SEO is that there are no rules.” As soon as you think you’ve beaten the game, the algorithm changes. Therefore, the article suggests focusing on SEO a little less without neglecting your website.
Website content is most important. Whether it’s your blog or general information about your business, your website’s written copy should inform and entertain your target audience as well as search engines. It is important to do proper keyword research and use keywords and link throughout your content, but also consider formatting elements like length and fonts to attract and keep readers’ attention.
While content is important, marketing a website doesn’t end there. WM’s article also discusses the importance of developing a community and collaborating with peers. Social media has made creating a community easier than ever as it gives your audience a chance to interact with your business. Email marketing is another great way to foster relationships with your customers and increase website traffic. Collaborating with peers is also important to get involved with conversations about your field and offer meaningful input.
McCauley Marketing Services focuses on each of these elements in all of the work we do for our clients. Although we won’t be giving up the SEO dream any time soon, we know that interaction with actual customers and potential customers is more important. A website should provide them with the information they need to know in a way that is easy to find and share.
